The option to redeem invalid banknotes will end on 1 July 2027
Press release Do you have any old, invalid banknotes at home? From 1 July 2027, the Riksbank will no longer redeem banknotes that have been invalid for more than ten years.
It will soon be ten years since the major banknote and coin changeover. The Riksbank considers that it is now reasonable to set a final date for the redemption of invalid Swedish banknotes. For a long time now, the public has had ample opportunity to identify and hand in old, invalid banknotes. After ten years, it is difficult to obtain the documentation required for the Riksbank to approve an application, such as bank statements. A time limit is also justified for cost reasons.
The Riksbank estimates that there are still invalid banknotes worth approximately SEK 3.9 billion that have not yet been redeemed.
The Riksbank must receive your application for redemption by 30 June 2027 at the latest. It costs 300 kronor to redeem invalid banknotes if the application is approved.
Further information on which banknotes are valid and which are invalid, and on how to apply for redemption, is available at riksbank.se.
