Questions & answers

What documentation is required to apply for redemption of banknotes?

To redeem banknotes, you will need to explain how you came into possession of them and provide documentation proving how you obtained them. The documentation may, for example, consist of bank statements, deeds of gift, deeds of distribution of an estate or a will. For any amount exceeding SEK 5,000, it is also necessary to submit proof of account ownership showing that the applicant is the holder of the account into which the money is to be paid.

The Riksbank assesses each application on a case-by-case basis. The amount of documentation required depends, amongst other things, on the size of the sum and the circumstances of the individual case. For larger sums, more supporting documentation is normally required, but the same documentation requirements may also apply to smaller sums, for example if several redemption applications have been submitted within a short period of time.
