The renovation of the Riksbank building

The Riksbank building at Brunkebergstorg is a valuable property in terms of architecture and cultural history and has a strong symbolic value. After 50 years, the property, which is also a listed building, has reached a point where large parts of it need to be renovated and adapted to meet today’s requirements, while preserving its cultural and historical values. The work is currently expected to take around four years.

The renovation in brief

question mark

Why is the Riksbank building being renovated?

The Riksbank building was inaugurated in 1976 and has not undergone any major renovations since then. Studies show that much of the technical infrastructure has reached the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced. The building must be adapted to meet today’s requirements regarding safety, health, accessibility and sustainability.

The renovation will ensure that the Riksbank building can continue to function as a modern and fit-for-purpose headquarters, while preserving its architectural and cultural heritage values.

What is going to be done?

A large part of the work consists of replacing technical systems that have reached the end of their lifespan, such as ventilation, electricity, fire safety and backup power. At the same time, the premises will be adapted to the needs of a modern business, with particularly high demands on safety, working environment and functionality. The work will require intervention in our blue-classified interior, which needs to be done carefully with high demands on restoration, but also in other parts of the premises, which is a listed building. The renovation is being carried out with a focus on sustainability and long-term management.

What is the timetable?

The overall timetable is currently as follows:

  • Spring 2027: Move out of the Riksbank building. During this period, the Riksbank’s operations will be conducted in replacement premises on Klarabergsgatan and Sveavägen in Stockholm.
  • Summer 2027: The renovation is planned to start after the summer of 2027 and is currently estimated to take around four years.
  • 2030: The move back into the Riksbank building is expected to be possible during 2030 at the earliest.

The timetable may be adjusted as the project develops and the conditions become clearer.

What will it cost?

The Riksbank’s initial assessment is that the cost of renovating and restoring the Riksbank building, including costs for replacement premises, will amount to SEK 3.3 billion. The cost calculation is a preliminary estimate. This cost calculation is an estimate that forms the basis for further calculations for a future investment decision, which is planned to be taken before summer 2027. The Riksbank owns the Riksbank building and is therefore also paying for the renovation.

The Riksbank building

The Riksbank building on Brunkebergstorg was completed in 1976 after six years of construction. The building, with its closed and robust design, was intended to give the impression of a strongbox – a building to last for eternity.
