How to become a RIX participant

An application to participate in the RIX system should be addressed to the Riksbank. The Riksbank processes every application and if the institution is considered to meet the requirements for participation it will sign an accession agreement with the Riksbank. In addition, a grant of pledge is to be presented if the institution is to use any credit facility. A RIX participant may choose to be certified solely for RIX-RTGS or RIX-INST or for both settlement services.

During the period 2026 – 2030, the Riksbank is conducting a project to change platform for the settlement of large-value payments in central bank money (RTGS) to the platform for such run by the Eurosystem, T2. More information about the project and its background is published under the tab Future Settlement Services.

The Riksbank has decided that it is justified to, during parts of the implementation project, restrict the possibility for new participants to join RIX-RTGS. The decision means that the Riksbank advises against new RIX-RTGS participants from joining during the period 1 July 2028 to 30 June 2030, and that it is not allowed for new RIX-RTGS participants to join during the period 1 January 2029 to 31 March 2030.

The decision has been made to ensure that all participants can transition to T2 at the scheduled time and thereby reduce the risk that the project will not be able to migrate according to schedule. Institutions interested in joining as participants in RIX-RTGS are asked to contact the Riksbank for more information about the upcoming period.

To facilitate the onboarding process, various instructions have been established:

  • Counterparty Application Instructions: Gives more detailed instructions on how to complete the application forms for institutions wishing to become RIX participants or for existing RIX participants who wish to obtain certification for one of the settlement services. The instructions also provide information on what is required to become a monetary policy counterparty or counterparty in FX transactions. See also “How to become a monetary policy counterparty”
  • RIX-RTGS Onboarding Guide: Describes the process of application certification and implementation of participation in RIX-RTGS
  • RIX-INST Onboarding Guide: Describes the process of application, certification and implementation of participation in RIX-INST
