The Labor Market and the Macroeconomy

September 2–3, 2010
Sveriges Riksbank, Stockholm, Sweden

Sveriges Riksbank, the central bank of Sweden, will host a conference on “The Labor Market and the Macroeconomy” on September 2–3, 2010. The aim of the conference is to discuss the implications of labor market frictions, institutions and policies for macroeconomic outcomes and the design of monetary policy. Suitable paper topics include:

(i) The sources of cyclical fluctuations in employment, wages and the labor wedge
(ii) Micro- and macroeconomic evidence on labor market frictions, wage determination, equilibrium unemployment, and determinants of worker flows, job creation and separation
(iii) Implications of structural change, for example in product market competition/globalization, in the bargaining framework or in other labor market institutions
(iv) Labor market dynamics in normal times and in times of crisis

We invite theoretical and empirical contributions on these and related topics. Participation in the conference has been confirmed by Susanto Basu (Boston College), Robert E. Hall (Stanford University), Julio J. Rotemberg (Harvard Business School), and Frank Smets (European Central Bank). Submissions should be made in PDF format by April 1, 2010 to conference@riksbank.se. Authors will be notified by May 15, 2010. Sveriges Riksbank will cover expenses for economy-class travel and accommodation for paper presenters and discussants.

The organizing committee consists of Mikael Carlsson, Kasper Roszbach, Ulf Söderström, Karl Walentin, and Andreas Westermark. The program and other information about the conference will be posted on the Riksbank website (www.riksbank.com/research/conferences), which also contains information about past conferences.
